What We Assess
Every assessment at Gray Matter is conducted by a registered psychologist in Ontario and follows current DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. We offer:
ADHD Assessment. For children, teens, and adults. Includes clinical interview, standardized rating scales from parents and teachers, and objective computerized testing of sustained attention and response control across both visual and auditory channels. Suitable from age 6.
Comprehensive Autism Assessment. A full diagnostic evaluation for suspected ASD across the lifespan. Includes developmental history, cognitive and adaptive behaviour testing, social communication measures, and observational assessment. Official diagnosis provided where criteria are met.
Psychoeducational Assessment. For children and teens experiencing learning difficulties, academic struggles, or processing differences. Assesses cognitive ability, academic achievement, processing speed, memory, and executive function. Used to obtain school accommodations and IEPs.
Gifted Assessment. For families and schools seeking to identify advanced cognitive ability. Includes standardized cognitive testing and a written report suitable for gifted program applications.
Combined ADHD and ASD Assessment. Where both are suspected, we conduct a single integrated assessment that addresses both presentations concurrently, reducing the time and cost of separate evaluations.
All assessments include a comprehensive written report, an official diagnosis where applicable, and recommendations for school, work, and clinical follow-up.
Who It Is For
We assess children, teens, and adults. Assessments are suited for:
A child whose school suspects ADHD but who has never had a formal evaluation
A teenager whose attention difficulties have gone undiagnosed and are affecting their grades
An adult who has always struggled with focus, organisation, or impulsivity and wants clarity
A family who has concerns about their child's social development, communication, or sensory responses
A child with known ADHD who needs a psychoeducational assessment to secure school accommodations
A student applying to a gifted program who needs a standardized cognitive assessment
A parent whose child has received an informal or unofficial diagnosis and wants an official report
An adult seeking a disability tax credit or workplace accommodation and needing documented psychological evidence
If you are not sure which assessment applies to your situation, the free consultation is the right place to start.
How Our ADHD Assessment Is Different
Most ADHD assessments rely heavily on rating scales from parents and teachers. Those scales are useful, but they measure observed behaviour, what adults see in a child, not what the brain is actually doing under controlled conditions. Observations vary by setting, by rater, and by the child's behaviour on a given day.
At Gray Matter, we add an objective layer: a computerized continuous performance test that measures sustained attention and response control in both visual and auditory channels simultaneously.
This distinction matters because:
ADHD does not always present the same way across modalities. Some individuals show pronounced attention deficits in auditory tasks but not visual ones, or vice versa. A test that measures only one channel misses this.
The assessment produces quantified data on attention, impulsivity, and consistency across a sustained 13-minute task. This cannot be faked or coached.
The visual and auditory scores are compared against a normative database and integrated with rating scale data to produce a complete attention profile.
Research validating this approach shows a sensitivity of 92% for correctly identifying ADHD in children, and a specificity of 90% for correctly ruling it out in non-ADHD populations.
An assessment that relies only on questionnaires and clinical interview can produce results that vary significantly from one clinician to another. Adding a validated, standardized, computerized measure of actual attentional performance removes much of that variability.
CANTAB Cognitive Testing
For both ADHD and ASD assessments, we use CANTAB, Cambridge Cognition's digital cognitive assessment platform, developed at the University of Cambridge and used in clinical research at institutions across more than 100 countries.
CANTAB is not a general cognitive screener. It is a precision instrument, designed to measure specific cognitive domains correlated directly to neural networks in the brain. What that means in practice:
What CANTAB measures:
Sustained attention and psychomotor speed
Executive function, including planning, cognitive flexibility, and working memory
Episodic and spatial memory
Emotion recognition and social cognition
Why it is better than pen-and-paper tests:
Language independent. Results are not affected by language ability, verbal fluency, or reading level, removing a major source of bias in children with learning differences.
Eliminates floor and ceiling effects. Tasks adjust in difficulty, meaning the test remains sensitive across a wide range of ability levels.
Reduces practice effects through parallel task modes and stimuli randomisation. Each administration is genuinely fresh.
Automated delivery and scoring removes clinician-to-clinician variance. The data is consistent regardless of who administers it.
Produces a larger number of data points than traditional pen-and-paper measures, increasing sensitivity and reducing noise.
Directly correlated to specific neural networks, giving us information not just about what a person can or cannot do, but about which cognitive system is underperforming.
In the context of an ASD assessment: CANTAB's social cognition and emotion recognition tasks provide objective data on the cognitive processes underlying social communication difficulties, areas where clinical interview and behavioural observation alone are often insufficient. We can see, in numbers, where specific cognitive systems are diverging from typical development.
In the context of an ADHD assessment: CANTAB's executive function and attention batteries give us a multi-dimensional picture of how the brain is managing attention, planning, and inhibition, across tasks that are designed to be sensitive even when symptoms are mild or when presentation is predominantly inattentive.
No other standard clinical assessment battery in outpatient psychology practice in Toronto uses this level of cognitive precision as a routine part of both ADHD and ASD evaluations.
What You Get
Every assessment at Gray Matter ends with a comprehensive written report prepared by the assessing psychologist. The report includes:
A summary of all assessment findings across all tools used
A diagnostic formulation using DSM-5 criteria
An official diagnosis, where criteria are met, signed by the registered psychologist
Cognitive and academic profile, including strengths and areas of difficulty
Tailored recommendations for home, school, and clinical supports
Guidance on next steps, including referrals, treatment options, and follow-up
The report is accepted by Ontario schools, colleges, universities, and employers for accommodation requests. It can also be submitted to support a disability tax credit application or workplace accommodation plan.
We also help with:
Disability Tax Credit (DTC) forms. We can complete the T2201 psychological section in support of your application.
School accommodation letters. For elementary, secondary, and post-secondary accommodation requests.
Workplace accommodation letters. For employees seeking accommodations under the Ontario Human Rights Code.
